MICRONEEDLING

This is a minimally invasive non-surgical treatment for facial rejuvenation. It involves the use of a medical grade micro-needling device to create a controlled skin injury, which stimulates new collagen formation.

As each fine needle punctures the skin, it creates a channel or micro-wound. The controlled injury triggers the skin to fill these micro-wounds with new collagen and elastin in the papillary dermis. New capillaries are also formed. This neovascularization and neocollagenesis following each treatment leads to skin rejuvenation, scar reduction and improved texture, tone and better complexion.

There are a variety of skin needling devices and rollers on the market. We offer a medical grade micro-needling treatment using the Collagen Pin, which can be adjusted to a depth of 3 mm, hence, it is much more effective than what is usually done in most spas.

Our treatments are done with sterile disposable needles and only sterile hyaluronic acid is applied after a treatment. Many spas apply non sterile topicals such as Vitamin C solutions that are not meant to be placed onto open wounds and these spas have experienced side effects such as infections and granulomas after using improper supplies and techniques.

Our clinic adheres to approved protocols developed by the dermatological community to ensure that our microneedling treatments are safe and effective.

  • Reduction of superficial scars
  • Reducing fine lines and wrinkles
  • Melasma
  • Improving overall skin tone, especially for those with photodamaged skin

Reduced risk of hyperpigmentation and scarring so safe on darker skin types

Suitable for thin and sensitive skin

As opposed to ablative Laser Resurfacing, the epidermis remains intact so healing is faster. As well, microneedling does not result in lines of demarcation between treated and untreated skin. This allows for specific areas to be treated and will blend in beautifully with untreated regions.

This procedure is well tolerated.

Patients arrive an hour early to have a topical numbing cream applied. The treatment may take up to an hour to complete, depending on the area to be treated and the severity of the problem. The cream will then be washed off and cleansed with an antiseptic solution.Using a sterile microneedling tip which contains a number of very small needles, the depth will be set, according to the area being treated. Our Collagen PIN is a medical grade micro-needling system that can go to a depth of 0.5 mm to over 3 mm deep. As the fine needles puncture the skin, they create small channels or micro-wounds which stimulates new skin cell regeneration. Unwanted pigmented spots and fine vessels can also be reduced with this treatment. Patients may need a series of treatments, depending on their skin condition. The treatments are usually 6-8 weeks apart.

Pre-Procedure Care
Stop all topical retinoids/Vitamin A acid creams one week prior to the treatment

Arrive with a freshly washed face, NO MAKE UP

If you have a history of cold sores, Dr Nield will prescribe an oral antiviral medication to be taken prior to the treatment and for the next 2 days

Post Procedure Care
Skin needling is usually well tolerated by patients.

For the first few days, one may experience facial swelling and redness. Then the face will become dry and scaly for up to a week. The degree of redness and swelling and peeling relate to the depth of the needles being used. This will be reviewed prior to treatment. Most patients can return to work after a few days but will still be experiencing peeling skin. Specific facial wash and topicals will be reviewed after the treatment. Sunscreen will be very important. Since the micropores seal off very quickly, the risk of a wound infection is rare. Patients must not peel any of the flaking skin but keep on moisturizing.

Acne scars may need 3-5 sessions to see results.

Facial lines and sunspots may only need 2-3 sessions but since aging is an ongoing process, patients are encouraged to do yearly maintenance treatments.

Generally, the treated areas recover rapidly from skin needling. However, occasionally side effects may occur:

  • Marked swelling and oozing skin during the initial recovery phase
  • Skin infection is rare but can be bacterial or viral in nature, a follow up visit is always booked to ensure patients are healing well
  • Milia may develop but these can be removed
  • Acne flare may occur

Contact dermatitis to skin creams applied after the treatment. It is very important to only use products recommended by Dr Nield’s staff
